SC Connections:
Where are all the Writers?
Writing. It's a solitary lifestyle. I've struggled to connect--personally--with anyone who knows the significance of calling one's self a "writer." You live in your mind--consumed by your story. Characters call on you at any time--they don't care that you're shopping, driving, working or sleeping. They NEED to be heard. Problems with your plot can be resolved in the worst possible places (like anywhere there is NO pen or keyboard!), and most folks you know probably don't care about your dilemma.
How DO you connect to readers? Agents? Publishers? Publicists? Do you self-publish? How do I determine comps? SOCIAL MEDIA? Please! What do we do? Where do we go? How do we birth this "thing" that is consuming us? (Some of us for years!)
I've attended several conferences and book festivals, all the while meeting some great folks. Seems like we always lose each other in our daily lives, however. I've attempted to joined local writers' groups, but I've yet to find the right fit for me. You know...where you can get support, honesty, critical (not hateful or browbeaten) feedback.
The 2012 South Carolina Bookfest offered a masterclass on "getting published." During the two-hour class, I heard so many questions from within the classroom--questions that could so easily be answered--if folks had a way to connect with each other.
We are not alone! Unite!
I invite other writers, no matter their location, to join in our discussions. Add your contact information to our list-and we'll all find a way to connect--either in person or the Internet. Sign up here. I look forward to meeting you! --DiDi
